FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are there other fire retardant coatings on the market? What is the difference?

Yes. The major differences are level of performance, thickness required, toxicity and smoke, durability, ease of application and approvals for use.

What is the difference between fire retardant, fire protective and fire proof?

As colloquial terms they are interchangeable. As technical terms they are defined by a specific standard.

How do I clean up after use? (brush, rollers, spray, hands, etc.)

Ordinary water and soap.

Is it harmful to children or animals if swallowed in liquid form or chips from a wall surface?

No! Refer to Acute Oral Toxicity Test in the Technical Manuel.

What types of surfaces will it not provide protection?

Carpet, drapers, fabrics, etc.

What types of surfaces will it protect?

Nearly all surfaces, such as wood, wood products, metals and composite. It is not useful for soft materials such as carpet, etc.

Can it be supplied in lower or higher viscosity?

es, viscosity can be varied upon request.

Can I spray this material on furniture, drapes, carpets to make them fire retardant?

No! NoFire is a coating only.

Can I make ordinary paint fire retardant?

No!

How do I know what thickness is required?

Refer to the application documents. For specific applications refer to the Technical Manual or contact the Technical Department of NoFire.

Can I tint it to another color?

No, it must be ordered and manufactured to the desired color.

What do I do if I accidentally crack or chip a section of a painted surface?

The affected area can be “touched up” similar to ordinary paint with no loss of performance.

Does it have a “one hour” or “two hour” rating

A product does not itself have this rating, but rather a complete system is rated. The system ratings are contained in the Technical Manual.

In what size containers is it shipped?

5 gallon pails or 50 gallon drums.

What if it accidentally comes into contact with my skin? Eyes? or swallowed?

Wash with soaped and water. Refer to MSDS document for further instructions.

Can I thin the liquid?

NoFire Technologies does not recommend thinning. If the liquid viscosity is too high, contact the Technical Department of NoFire.

When applying outside, what is the highest or lowest air temperature allowable?

The highest and lowest air temperature are 180° F and 40° F.

How long for drying and cure?

This depends on air temperature, relative humidity and coating thickness. At room temperature and humidity, a minimum of 2 hours drying is required before applying additional coats. Curing time recommended is 48 hours, but 24 hours is minimum.

What kind of primer?

Many primers are suitable. The best are matte finish or rough finish primers. Check with the Technical Department of NoFire for specific recommendations for your application.

Does it require a primer?

Ordinarily a primer is not required, except when coating certain types of paint, such as enamel or steel in a marine environment where corrosion protection is recommended.

Any special surface preparation?

Surface preparation required is identical to an ordinary paint job. No Special preparation.

How is it applied?

Ordinary brush, roller, airless spray or conventional spray equipment.

Is it a coating or a paint?

It is both. A “coating” provides protection & a “paint” is used to decorate.
